平步青云 (píng bù qīng yún) — Level Steps into Blue Clouds · A Smooth Rise to High Station
A 4-character phrase, not a single character.
Picture a promotion that does not feel like a cliff. 平步 is a walk on level ground; 青云 is the blue-cloud height classical Chinese used for high station. Put together, the four characters wish a rise that keeps ordinary footsteps even as the rank goes up — Moedict’s “smooth, unblocked, rapid rise to high office,” not a weather report and not a fortune claim. Against See 步步高升 →, which counts stairs, this one asks for ease. Against See 鹏程万里 →, which leaves the ground on a mythic bird, this one keeps human walking.
The halves are older than the fused toast. In the Shiji, Xu Jia finds the man he once ruined seated as Qin chancellor and gasps that he never expected him to reach the blue clouds. In Tang, Bai Juyi watches friends in the capital take high office as if strolling on flat ground while he ages in Jiangzhou. Song prose is already using the continuous four characters for an early, easy-feeling ascent. That history is why a desk card or a graduation gift can still carry the phrase without borrowing wealth language: it names how the next elevation should feel.
A hand-brushed “平步青云” by Artist Lina Sun suits the coworker whose promotion should be toasted as an easy rise, the boss whose trajectory a junior is allowed to name in public, and the friend whose birthday or graduation should hear level steps instead of another staircase or another horizon. It does not promise a title. It names the quality of the ascent you want for them.
- a smooth, unblocked rise to high station — Moedict / MOE Chengyu
- taking high office as if walking on level ground — Bai Juyi's 平步
- reaching oneself onto the blue clouds of rank — Shiji 青云
- career toast for promotion, exam success, or a new chapter's easy ascent
- climbing one rung at a time That is 步步高升 — the mechanism is the staircase. 平步青云 wishes the opposite texture: level steps, not counted rungs.
- a brilliant road laid out ahead 前程似锦 describes the terrain's quality (brocade). This phrase describes the feel of elevation into station, not the road's pattern.
- a mythic flight across ten thousand li 鹏程万里 leaves the ground on the Zhuangzi peng. 平步青云 keeps human walking; the height is in the clouds of rank, not in wing-span.
- good fortune or wealth arriving Dictionaries describe smooth promotion to high position. They do not license fortune, prosperity, or causal claims.
The short arms are the point: these readings don’t reach it.
- 平 levelLevel, even, flat. Here it modifies the walk: the steps are not a climb.
- 步 stepsSteps, walking. The rise is pictured as ordinary walking, not flight and not a ladder.
- 青 blue-skyBlue-green of clear sky — not the library single 清 (clarity). Here it colors the clouds of high station.
- 云 cloudsTraditional 雲. Figurative high office / high station in the classical quotes, not literal weather.
characters
- 青云 qīng yún blue clouds as high station — the second half that 平步 walks into
- 青云直上 qīng yún zhí shàng straight up into the blue clouds — near toast; stresses vertical line more than level steps
- 平步 píng bù level steps / walking as if on flat ground — the first half MOE isolates from Bai Juyi
- 扶摇直上 fú yáo zhí shàng rising straight on a whirlwind — near sense of rapid ascent; shares no character with 平步青云
Cinnabar marks the characters 平步青云 actually contains. The dark row is a relative by meaning or by sound, not one shared stroke.
The Story Behind the Character
The Ministry's Chengyu dictionary does not invent a single pre-Qin four-character origin. It splits the phrase into two halves that later joined. 平步 — to take a step as if on level ground — is traced to Bai Juyi's Tang poem from his Jiangzhou demotion, where friends still in the capital "take dukes and ministers as if walking on flat ground" (平步取公卿) while he ages in a southern city. 青云 — blue clouds as high station — is traced to the Shiji: when Xu Jia finds that the man he once humiliated has become Qin chancellor, he says he never expected him to "reach himself onto the blue clouds" (自致於青雲之上).
Moedict's gloss is plain: a smooth, unblocked, rapid rise to high office. English renderings say "to rapidly go up in the world" or a meteoric career rise. The image that holds the four characters together is not climbing and not flying. It is walking — ordinary steps — into a height usually reserved for weather.
Song writers were already using the continuous four characters as self-description of an early, easy-feeling rise (袁文《瓮牖闲评》 on 廉宣仲). By then 平步 and 青云 had fused into one career toast: may the next elevation feel level underfoot.
Classical lines
- roughly 900 years
- c. 1st c.
I never expected you could bring yourself up onto the blue clouds.
Xu Jia, face to the ground before the Qin chancellor he once wronged: 青云 here is high station, not weather, and the shock is that the rise was already complete.
虚怀事僚友,平步取公卿。 Open-hearted with fellow officials, they take dukes and ministers as if walking on level ground.
Written from demotion in Jiangzhou: 平步 is the friends' ease in the capital, set against Bai's own stalled road.
当涂者升青云,失路者委沟渠。 Those on the open road rise into the blue clouds; those who lose the path are left in the ditches.
Same figurative 青云 of high station, spoken as the harsh sorting of a career age rather than as a toast.
Why This Character Matters
In gift Chinese the phrase sits next to 步步高升 and 青云直上 without doing their jobs. 步步高升 counts stairs; 青云直上 stresses a straight shot upward. 平步青云 keeps the odd detail that the steps are level — the rise is wished as ease, not as struggle and not as spectacle. Banquet and desk cards still reach for it when someone is promoted, passes a hard exam, or starts a chapter that should not feel like a cliff.
Calligraphy gifts use it when the relationship is professional or peer-level: a coworker, a boss whose trajectory you are allowed to toast, a friend whose next role you refuse to picture as a grind. It names the quality of the ascent. It does not promise wealth, fortune, or a title already earned.
A few characters live near "平步青云" but mean something quieter, sharper, or more specific. Here's how to tell them apart.
Wishes a rise that feels level underfoot — ease into high station.
Names the climb itself — each step higher than the last.
About the texture of elevation into rank (level steps, blue-cloud station).
About the terrain ahead — a road as brilliant and detailed as brocade.
Keeps ordinary walking; height is figurative station.
Measures the future as a single vast flight — scale, not ease.
At graduation the catalog already paints the road (前程似锦), counts the stairs (步步高升), and launches a mythic flight (鹏程万里).
- At graduation the catalog already paints the road (前程似锦), counts the stairs (步步高升), and launches a mythic flight (鹏程万里). 平步青云 names a different wish: that the rise into the next station will feel level underfoot — the same ease Bai Juyi's friends had when they took high office as if walking on flat ground. For the graduate whose gift should ask for an unforced ascent, not a larger horizon.
- A coworker, boss, or friend's birthday is often the day a career toast is allowed. 平步青云 does not grade finished work (事业有成) and does not count rungs. It wishes the next stretch of elevation the quality the phrase was built for: a walk that stays level even as the station climbs into the blue clouds.
